Upload Your Content to Box

Options

For all new users, we're thrilled you're here!

One of the most important things you’ll do is – yes, you guessed it – put all your files on Box for others to see and share. You've got quite a few options in transferring content all tracked here in the following options below:

Upload to Box With the File Browser

Options

While browsing all files and folders in Box, uploading a new file or folder is straightforward:

  1. Click the Upload button in the upper-right corner.

    Upload Download - 1
  2. Select Files or Folders, depending on what you'd like to upload.
  3. Select the file(s) or folder you'd like to upload.
  4. You can select multiple files for upload by holding the Command or Control key (Mac or Windows, respectively) while selecting files. However, you can only select one folder at a time for upload.
  5. Click Open or Upload.

Note:

If you are having trouble uploading files, here are some possible issues and solutions:

· The upload button is greyed out and not working

· Issues uploading folders in Windows 7

· Issues uploading folders in Safari on Macs

Upload to Box Through Email

Options

You can easily upload files or send attachments to a specific Box folder by email when you enable the Allow uploads to this folder via email option. You can then forward email attachments or send files to the email address generated for that folder to upload your files.

If you decide to forward email attachments to the folder, only the attachments will be uploaded, not the content of the message.

To enable this functionality:

  • Right-click (or click the "...") the folder in which you would like to enable email uploads, and click Settings.
  • On the Folder Settings page, under Uploading > Email Uploads, check the box next to "Allow uploads to this folder via email"

  • A unique email address will be generated for the folder, and will be displayed below the checkbox fields. Send files to this address to upload them into the folder. You can copy this email address to your clipboard and enter it as a contact in your email address book, or simply paste it into the "to" line of an email with attachments.
  • You can also enable settings for the email upload option that will Only allow uploads from collaborators in this folder, or automatically Overwrite same-name files when uploading by email or widget.
  • Click Save Changes in the upper-right to apply your settings.

Note:

  • Upload via email only works for file attachments. Content in the body of an email will not be uploaded to Box.
  • The cumulative size of the message body and attachments (including signature) cannot exceed 50MB.
  • Both the folder owner and sender will receive a notification that files were uploaded successfully.
  • Collaborators will also receive a notification if upload notifications are enabled for the folder.
  • Known issue: Email uploads of .msg/.eml files through Microsoft Outlook desktop application fail due to how Outlook handles attachment of these file extensions.

Using Box with FTP or FTPS

Options

FTP is intended for initial bulk uploading and occasional bulk downloading of files from your account. FTP is available to business and enterprise accounts for bulk migration of data. It is not available for personal accounts (free or pro).

We do not recommend using FTP as your primary access method.

Note:

· For enterprise accounts, Allow regular (unencrypted) FTP is checked by default. Only administrators for enterprise Box accounts can clear this setting and prevent their account holders from accessing unencrypted FTP connections.

· For business and business-plus accounts, Allow regular (unencrypted) FTP is cleared by default. Administrators for business and business-plus accounts cannot change this setting.

To connect to Box's FTP server you need an FTP client of your choosing. See Related Links, below, for more details.

To access Box's FTP server:

  • Server: ftp.box.com
  • Username: Your Box account email address (SSO log in not supported)
  • Password: Your Box account password
  • Port:
    • For implicit encrypted connection (FTPS): 990
    • For standard, unencrypted connection (FTP) or explicit encrypted connection (FTPES): 21. Transfers may be slower when using encryption due to additional processing.
  • TLSv1.1 or TLSv1.2 is required. TLSv1.0 is no longer supported.

Note Box supports Passive FTP. We do not support active FTP. By default, Box accepts only encrypted FTPS connections. Enterprise-level Box Admins can enable unencrypted FTP connections from their Admin Console by going to Enterprise Settings > Security.

Let's see an example, using Filezilla.

Here's Filezilla quick connect:

Here's Filezilla Site Manager for easy storage/retrieval of your Box FTP settings:

  • File > Site Manager:
Filezilla Site Manager.pngFilezilla > Site ManagerIn the Filezilla Site Manager example above, leave the Port field blank as shown so it is handled automatically.
  • If an Unknown certificate dialog box displays, check Always trust certificate in future sessions.

Notes and Troubleshooting:

  • To access Box's FTP server, you must set Box FTP Server to available. To do this, from your Admin Console go to Business/Enterprise Settings > Apps. This option should be set to available by default. If Box FTP Server is disabled, Box displays an Authentication Failed message when you attempt to log in from the FTP client.
  • FTP as a transfer protocol does not support single sign-on. If SSO is enabled for your account, you must create a Box-specific password to supplement your SSO login. To do this, use a browser to log in to your Box account and go to Account Settings > Account. Then scroll down (if necessary) to the Create External Password section.
  • The FTP protocol uses separate channels for authentication and data. Ensure all required ports are whitelisted.
    • Box supports FTP (port 21), FTPS implicit (port 990), and FTPES explicit (port 21), over passiveFTP. Box does not support active FTP or SFTP.
    • For the data channel, Box uses ports 10,000 - 29,999. Verify that your firewall has these ports open.
  • Error: Connection timed out after 20 seconds of inactivity: Increase your timeout setting. In Filezilla, go to Preferences > Connection > Timeout to do this. Setting this to 120 seconds can be helpful for folders containing large numbers of files.
  • Resuming an upload/download: Box does not support either the REST (restart) or the APPE (append) commands. This means we do not support resumable uploads/downloads on Box for FTP. You must retry any failed upload or download. In this case FTP client log displays 551 Box: Partial-file uploads are notsupported.
  • 530 Box: CAPTCHA is required. You have triggered Captcha on your account. To clear Captcha, use your Web browser and Box credentials (or External Password, if you're using SSO) to log in to app.box.com.
  • Error on output file. You may have folder names that include trailing space characters. These are not allowed. Rename any folders to remove the extra space.
  • Request rate limit exceeded, please try again later. Reduce the number of simultaneous connections from your FTP client.
